Coward's Luck

the countertop is cold
like the tree from which it rose
Elbows lean against the wood
As kisses and tabs close
Darling oh, i guarantee
that my love is valid
and the weight that you've been carrying
is nothing short of tragic
i can fill up all my days
with the laziest distractions
the prettiest girls without no names
the vice no different than the shame
and oh i grow cold
as i spread apart my toes
and try to grip the ground
as my shoulders implode
Wake up with my glasses on
and hell to pay again
The walls and windows call me out
and say the floors a friend.
My stomach says to eat
but my hearts too weak to cook
this coward's luck i lean on
has got me feeling like a crook
I'll sit upon my hands
as i look for love
assume that one day all of this
will undoubtedly dissolve
and oh i grow cold
as i spread apart my toes
and try to grip the ground
as my shoulders implode

I know it aint much
but it's all i can afford
throw a blanket at my feet
and make a bed out of a floor
close your tired eyes
let a yawn out like a roar
sleep will come to you
like a ship upon the shore
The hard wood isn't soft
like the arms of the one you keep
The only thing thats harsher
is the morning you will greet
full of half clear memories
and words you did not mean
friends who you estranged
and strangers on whom you leaned
The glory of the morning
and breakfast with a friend
The way his mouth moves
when he starts to drink again
A cup of coffee
and a chestful of smoke
a lighthearted laugh
about a message that you wrote
If it was a little colder
you could wear a coat
and plant a seed of comfort
with water that would grow
I don't have the answers
to your questions dear
everything i learned,
i learned far away from here
and in due time when
i lay myself to die
I hope it's restful as
sleep in wintertime
sweeping dreams like
snowbanks on a lake
a whispering wind
and the rain of yesterday

Oh you can forget
better than anyone i've met
memories for you
are just things that you regret
the poetry of concrete
doesn't resonate unless
my face is scraped and legs are broke
laying in bloody mess
Put some hate into my heart
and weight upon my chest
Ill try to give you memories
that hurt you to address
Photographs of better days
when we'd sit in the long grass
and i would lay my heavy head
into the comfort of your lap
The world that I once
used to love and own
Hates me cause i haven't learned
how to let things go
Images of her
that are burned into my eyes
Belong to fading friends
As i retreat into a lie
And I'l scramble for a purpose
even though I've reached some goals
Commitments and the distance
make you feel like you're alone
And you look like the ending
to a book i haven't read
when i close my heavy eyes
and lay back in my bed
I have visions of a place where i lived
where the wind blew cold and the snow stacked high
No matter what i did
and just like an old friend
that you haven't seen in years
it's regret that you expect
but disappointment that you fear
